The GIMP is a free digital image creation and editing tool released under the GPL license, to serve the purpose of such high-end professional software such as Photoshop in an open-source, easily accessible program.
It incorporates nearly all of the features of its main competitor, as well as several of its own unique touches. It offers both basic image-editing tools such as layer manipulation and all of the standard tools (paint bucket, brush, rotate, etc), plus its own built-in, customizable filters and scripts that can be improved, replaced or added via plug-ins. All without costing you more than whatever exorbitant price your ISP is charging you already!
It is available for Windows, Mac, and Unix. Both precompiled and source code versions are available for most systems.
Note: I've yet to test the Mac or Unix versions; I run it on Windows, myself.

You need X11 to run it on a Mac. If the GIMP were a cartridge, X11, which can be found on Install Disc 1, which came with the computer, would be the Game Boy.
On a sidenote, can we try to post about stuff that takes more than two trips to the Internet to discover? It's like if Nick posted about Penny-Arcade or Dinosaur Comics.
I've been considering it! (Though I don't think that Dinosaur Comics is really a fair comparison.)
:-]
I tried to find X11 for ages, and could never find a version that worked.
Also, I have no idea what the hell Install Disc 1 is. >_>
If you look around in the box your MacBook Pro came in, you'll stumble upon a CD eventually. Stick it into the computerbox and look around for X11.
